After the euphoria about the iphone is mostly gone (although it is a nice device you are too much restricted to the software apple provides with it and it's just too expensive) I checked the Openmoko Mailinglist again. The developers published their roadmap there for the further steps in the Openmoko-development.
Here a short summary:
- 2007-02-11 Phase 0: Developer Preview
The phone will be given to some developers for testing purposes, the sourcecode will become publicly available and the community dedicated websites will be available. - 2007-03-11 Phase 1: Official Developer Launch
The Neo1973 will be available on www.openmoko.com for US$350 + shipping. - 2007-09-11 Phase 2: Mass Market Sale
Beside the online sales the phone will also be available at selected carriers and retail stores worldwide. A second generation of the phone will also be introduced around this time.
Additionally some specs for the FIC Neo1973 were announced:
- 2.8" VGA (480x640) TFT Screen
- Samsung s3c2410 SoC @ 266 MHz
- Global Locate AGPS chip
- Ti GPRS (2.5G not EDGE)
- Unpowered USB 1.1
- Touchscreen
- micro-sd slot
- 2.5mm audio jack
- 2 additional buttons
- 1200 mAh battery (charged over USB)
- 128 MB SDRAM
- 64 MB NAND Flash
- Bluetooth (2.0)
This looks really promising. The only thing I miss is WLAN that hopefully will be integrated in the second generation.
